With every book that he writes, Nadeem Aslam only gets better at his craft. Since his debut novel in 1993, “Season of the Rainbirds”, Aslam returns to Pakistan with his latest book “The Golden Legend”. His new book is also just the others – a statement made against wars, what was started by the West and how the country he depicts is hell-bent on completing it, and to top it the darkness of the world. What is different about “The Golden Legend” (which I personally love) is the combination of realism and fable across a terrain of terrorism, tragedy and cruelty.

“The Golden Legend” opens with the death of a middle-aged architect Massud, leaving his wife and collaborator Nargis behind. Both of them were collectively working on building a library on the outskirts of the city – to which they were transporting books and that is how Massud got shot and died. At this time, with turmoil surrounding them and a roadside shooting as well, Nargis flees with her Christian neighbour Helen. This is when there are violent relations between Christians and Muslims.

This is only one part of the story. There is also the story of Helen, who falls in love with Imran, an unknown Kashmiri. There is the story of Helen’s mother Lily. There is another tale of the US officer who wants Nargis to forgive her husband’s killer. Amidst all this, there is the story of life, love and reconstruction of faith.

Aslam’s prose cuts through to you. At least it has always to me. His narrative is wise and affecting and perhaps more timely than ever. Catharsis for his characters comes in forms and ways one cannot even imagine. Through his solid writing, Aslam reflects Pakistan’s present and past through a story of love and human spirit, which only he could have offered.

I have loved and enjoyed reading Nadeem Aslam’s books. I have always been curious as to what authors read and what compels them to perhaps classify what they read as their favourite reads over time. With this, I start this series with Nadeem Aslam’s favourite 20 books published within his lifetime, each of which he has read at least twice.

When you read a Nadeem Aslam novel, you mull over it. You take in his words and breathe what he has to say. You are aware of the political undertones in his books. At times, you also may not like what you read. You might also detest some parts. You will yell in happiness when something good happens to one of his characters. You want to keep the book aside and you will not be able to, because that is the power of his books. You will ignore everything else and read on, because Aslam has a story to tell and his characters will talk to you. They will make you believe and sometimes make you cry and live as well.

“The Blind Man’s Garden” according to me is one of the best books that Aslam has written. I have read all his books and while all his books have the much needed political angle; this one to me is most emotional and heart-wrenching in a lot of places. I interviewed Nadeem Aslam at the Jaipur Literature Festival this year (which will be a different post) and he was so passionate about the book and the way he spoke with me. The book almost came alive through him. All his characters and the situations he put them through almost seemed surreal and believable. For me that is the craft of a great storyteller. “The Blind Man’s Garden” makes you feel and think about humans and what does war do to them. He gets into the heart of his characters and makes them speak for themselves. He makes them tell their stories, their lives spread across the canvas of his landscape, of time unknown and sometimes time is of great essence. This is precisely why I cannot help myself but mark almost every other line on every other page of an Aslam novel.

Jeo and his foster-brother Mikal leave their home in a small Pakistani city not to fight with the Taliban but to help care for the wounded victims. The Western Armies have invaded Afghanistan and the brothers only want to help the wounded, whether Afghani or the Americans. They only want to help and yet they get embroiled deep into the war as its unwilling soldiers. At the same time left behind is Jeo’s wife and her superstitious mother, and their father Rohan, who is slowly but surely turning blind. The war is seen through from all perspectives and that is the crux of the story.

For me everything worked in the book. The writing is sharp and hits in places that you would not expect it to. The past and the present situations merge beautifully throughout the entire narrative. In fact, what I loved the most about the book was the way the structure was built and at the same time the prose seemed very fluid, as though it was waiting to flow through the reader’s mind and heart. The heart of the book is about everything surrounding the war – lost children, grieving parents, hopeful wives and children who are left behind wondering when their fathers will return. Despite all this, what strings the book together is hope, which is unending and everlasting.

There are a lot of sub-elements and plots to the book (which I will not spoil for you) that add to the beauty of this wonderfully written novel. There is beauty and at the same time there is this sharp ache and a prayer that all should go well for the characters that you have come to known while reading the book. As a reader, I found myself hoping that all went well. Such is the power of this magnificent read. It is for sure one of the best I will read this year.

When you read a Nadeem Aslam novel, you sink in the words. You cherish the writing, and let the plot linger with you way after the book is over. Nadeem Aslam was introduced to me by a friend, when he gifted me a copy of, “Maps for Lost Lovers” and I remember reading it in one night. I was hooked. There was no way I was going to go to sleep without finishing the book. The same happened when I started reading, “The Wasted Vigil”.

“The Wasted Vigil” is not a new book however that does not matter. Moreover it is quite difficult to write a book about Afghanistan and deal with its history of the last thirty-odd years. I have read a lot of books on Afghanistan and its condition, however this one has been very different (rather handled quite well) and written like a dream.

The book is set in present Afghanistan and includes a band of diverse characters. An English Ex-Pat, his Afghani wife and daughter, and the stories from their village form the backdrop of the story. To this, other characters are added – An American Ex-Spy, the sister of a dead Soviet from the 80’s, an American Special Forces agent, and a young Jihadi and two Afghan “warlords” (which is the most interesting in my opinion), complete the tapestry of this book. The action in the book takes place at Marcus’s house (The Englishman). Lara arrives there one fine day in search of her brother and the drama unfolds. The others arrive one after the other in search of someone or something. This is the premise of the book.

What I loved about the book was of course the way it was written but also the way the characters are etched throughout, from beginning to the end, no one is out of place. There are some astoundingly beautiful sentences, though at times (rarely) I felt they somehow did not add to the narrative as whole. Nonetheless, I enjoyed them a lot and here are some striking examples:

“All those who love know exactly the limit they’re prepared to go to. They know exactly what is required.”

“On the journey towards the beloved, you live by dying at every step”

“How keen everyone is to make this world their home forgetting its impermanence It’s like trying to see and name constellations in a fireworks display.”

The literary and historical references in the book are bang on and make a lot of sense when read from an overall perspective. The narrative moves back and forth from one person to another and that at times presents a problem reading the book, however before you know it, you will get used to the style of writing.

The threads are connected with great care throughout the book. The socio-economic lay of the land is described intricately and gives the reader a sense of place and time. No sides are taken and no judgments are made. That is probably the best way to approach this book while reading it as well. All I can say is that I enjoyed this book a lot, despite not agreeing to certain parts. A great read for sure. Intense and thought-provoking.
