387 Short Stories: Day 39: Story 39: This Blessed House by Jhumpa Lahiri

Interpreter of Maladies Title: This Blessed House
Author: Jhumpa Lahiri
Taken from the Collection: Interpreter of Maladies

Jhumpa Lahiri had to be read in this project. There is no way that I would not read a short story written by her. And I read what I read a long time ago. A known story and yet unknown in so many ways. “This Blessed House” is about a newlywed Indian couple – Sanjeev and Twinkle, who explore their new house in Hartford, which appears to have been owned by fervent Christians. They find artefacts and paraphernalia throughout the house.

Sanjeev is not okay with this and feels uncomfortable. Twinkle on the other hand seems to be okay. This is where disagreements begin. Their life takes a major twist and that is something which I will not reveal. The story in itself is so complete that it leaves you astounded after you have finished reading it. There are parts and lines that could not have belonged anywhere else in her writing but her. A gem of a work.
