387 Short Stories: Day 31: Story 31: Loot by Nadine Gordimer

Loot and Other Stories by Nadine Gordimer Title: Loot
Author: Nadine Gordimer
Taken from the collection: Loot and Other Stories

“Loot” by Nadine Gordimer is a story like no other. I say this with all earnestness. This is the second time I read one of her short stories and have been completely fascinated by her writing. “Loot” is about a catastrophic event and how that leads to people looting possessions and wanting more from life, despite the fact that everything is crumbling around them.

The writing is sparse and sharp. Gordimer’s style is daunting and yet there is something compassionate about it. She speaks of circumstances and situations that probably no one would and that is what makes her so different. A writer not to be missed.

I read the story an hour ago. A very short story sculpted to perfection with the minimum of words and with astute punctuation( people rushed to take; take, take.) and imagery: gasping sea- plants gaped.
What is more fascinating is that there are two stories in this short tale, one about everybody and the other about an old man.
